Mom Approved Shorts: Abercrombie

I reviewed 5 popular Abercrombie shorts styles to find the best mom approved fit. Read my honest Abercrombie shorts comparison for summer.

There are very few things in my closet that have stayed consistently reliable since 2020, but Abercrombie denim shorts are absolutely one of them.

Every summer, I try other brands. Every summer, I convince myself there has to be something better out there. And every single year, I somehow end up right back on the Abercrombie website adding another pair to cart.

The denim is good. The washes are good. The sizing is usually consistent. But most importantly? They understand proportions in a way a lot of brands don’t.

That said, not every cut works for every stage of life.

As someone currently deep in my “I still want to feel cute but I also need to sit cross-legged at soccer practice comfortably” era, I wanted to do a full try-on of all five of Abercrombie’s most popular shorts cuts to determine which ones are actually mom approved.

So I tested all five — shortest inseam to longest — and ranked them based on comfort, coverage, wearability, and whether I’d realistically reach for them outside of a pool day.

And listen… two of them didn’t make the cut.

If you’ve been searching for an honest Abercrombie shorts review or trying to decide which style is worth buying this year, here’s the full breakdown.

Mom Short

Inseam: 2.5"
Rise: Highest rise

The irony of the Mom Short not being mom approved for me is honestly pretty funny.

These are definitely the shortest and most fitted option in the lineup. The rise comes up very high on the waist, which I normally love because it creates a snatched look through the midsection, but the inseam is just too short for my current lifestyle.

The fit through the leg is more fitted than relaxed, so they don’t give a lot of movement through the thigh. They look great standing up. Sitting down? Different story.

To be clear: these are still cute shorts. If I were heading to the pool, the lake, or on vacation, I’d absolutely wear them with an oversized button-down and call it a day. But for actual everyday wear while chasing kids around? They’re just not practical for me.

Mom Approved Verdict: ❌ Pool only.

Style it with:

  • Oversized linen button-down + rubber slide sandals

  • Black bikini top + flip flops for vacation

90s Relaxed Cut-Off Short

Inseam: 3.25"
Rise: High rise

The 90s Relaxed Cut-Off immediately felt more wearable than the Mom Short thanks to the looser leg fit.

These have more of that effortless vintage denim feel — relaxed, casual, and slightly undone in the best way. They don’t cling to the thigh, which makes them way more comfortable overall.

But even with the improved fit, they still fall into the “too short for real life” category for me personally.

I know a lot of people love this length, especially if you’re taller or just more comfortable in shorter shorts, but I kept comparing them to the longer cuts and realized I’d never actually choose these first for an everyday outfit.

Again: cute. Just not mom approved by my standards.

Mom Approved Verdict: ❌ Still pool only.

Style it with:

  • Ribbed tank + chunky sneakers

  • Graphic tee + Birkenstocks

A-Line Short

Inseam: 4"
Rise: Mid rise

This is where the lineup started getting really good.

The A-Line Short was the first pair that immediately felt effortless and wearable for everyday life. The 4-inch inseam gives just enough added coverage without losing the flattering shape that makes denim shorts feel cute in the first place.

These sit more mid-rise compared to the ultra high rise styles, which actually makes them feel very easy and comfortable to wear all day.

The standout feature is definitely the leg shape. The subtle flare through the thigh creates an almost skirt-like silhouette that’s incredibly flattering and doesn’t squeeze anywhere.

If you usually struggle with denim shorts feeling tight on your thighs, this cut is worth trying.

Mom Approved Verdict: ✅ Officially approved.

Style it with:

  • Fitted white tee + Adidas Sambas

  • Lightweight sweater tank + flat sandals

Dad Short

Inseam: 5"
Rise: Ultra high rise

The Dad Short has quietly become one of Abercrombie’s best styles, and I finally understand the hype.

These are what I imagine when I think of “cool mom denim.” They have a longer inseam that gives comfortable coverage, but the structured ultra high rise keeps them from looking overly casual or frumpy.

The leg fit is relaxed and straight without being oversized, which makes them incredibly versatile. They also style really well with both fitted tops and oversized layers.

This pair feels the most Pinterest-mom coded in the best possible way.

Mom Approved Verdict: ✅ Very approved.

Style it with:

  • Oversized striped button-down + white sneakers

  • Basic bodysuit + strappy sandals

High Rise Loose Short

Inseam: 6"
Rise: High rise

And finally… the winner.

The High Rise Loose Short ended up being my favorite cut out of all five styles.

These somehow manage to do the impossible: they feel comfortable, modest enough for everyday life, and still stylish. The longer inseam gives the most coverage in the lineup, but because the leg is loose and relaxed, they don’t feel matronly at all.

This is the pair I could genuinely wear on repeat all summer long — errands, park days, travel days, casual dinners, all of it.

The fit feels effortless in that “off-duty model but also carrying snacks in your tote bag” kind of way.

If you’re only buying one pair from this Abercrombie shorts comparison, this would absolutely be my recommendation.

Mom Approved Verdict: ✅ The winner.

Style it with:

  • Black tank + woven slide sandals

  • Oversized sweatshirt + retro sneakers

Final Verdict

After trying all five Abercrombie shorts cuts side-by-side, three officially earned the mom approved stamp: the A-Line Short, the Dad Short, and the High Rise Loose Short.

Each one gives a little more coverage and comfort while still feeling flattering and current, which honestly feels like the sweet spot at this stage of life. I still want denim shorts to look cute — I just also want to bend over without fear.

The overall winner for me was definitely the High Rise Loose Short. They checked every box: comfortable, flattering, versatile, and realistic for actual everyday wear.

If you’ve been waiting to shop Abercrombie shorts for summer, this is your sign — especially while the sale is still happening because the best sizes always disappear first.

And stay tuned because the next brand in my Mom Approved Shorts series is already coming!
